In activities of daily living, standing humans frequently receive unexpected perturbations to the hand while performing a focal task. In these situations, successful performance requires controlling the arm posture and maintaining balance. The objective of the thesis was two-fold: first, to characterize the onset latencies of the initial postural response in healthy individuals to unexpected hand perturbations in posterior-anterior direction; second, to investigate what sensory information evoked the activations of the distal leg muscles shortly after the perturbation.
