The activities of the Leopoldina during the period of Soviet-occupied zone and early GDR have extensively been studied by documents and publications. Important aspects were the efforts of the responsible Vice-President, Otto Schlueter, for the animation of the academy after 1945; the struggling interactions with the Soviet Military Administration (SMAD) as well as with various German governmental institutions, the election of new members, maintaining the all-German character of the academy, and his help in the conflicts between the members of the academy and the GDR government.
