Geschichte der Leopoldina 1932-1954 hier: Die Nachkriegsjahre und die Erhaltung des gesamtdeutschen Charakters der Akademie in der SBZ/DDR von 1945-1954 Abschlussbericht

The activities of the Leopoldina during the period of Soviet-occupied zone and early GDR have extensively been studied by documents and publications. Important aspects were the efforts of the responsible Vice-President, Otto Schlueter, for the animation of the academy after 1945; the struggling interactions with the Soviet Military Administration (SMAD) as well as with various German governmental institutions, the election of new members, maintaining the all-German character of the academy, and his help in the conflicts between the members of the academy and the GDR government. The Leopoldina was officially recognised by the government not before 1952 in connection with the 300th anniversary of its foundation. In spite of the fact that the government tried to use the academy for their own aims, Schlueter was successful in retaining the all-German character of the academy with respect to the composition of the membership and of the Senate and with regard to the scientific conception. Within the framework of this project, materials of archives have been analysed concerning the history of the Leopoldina and its members (1945-1954). We could extract valuable informations from the Leopoldina's archives and other archives, and from interviews with witnesses of that period.
