Religion within the armed forces Military chaplaincy in an international comparison

'The worldwide covering of chaplaincy concepts shows that special spiritual support of servicemen is available in many states. This support is provided by all world religions like Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism as well as by many small religious groups. Various states of the former Eastern bloc currently want to set up new chaplain services. The variety of the existing forms of chaplain services in the armed forces extends from the sole responsibility for ritual acts all the way to taking on tasks of a religious police. Still, we can describe a 'standard model' which is widely spread and from which most chaplain services deviate only slightly. For their organisational structure is mainly oriented to the criterion of the ability to work within military surroundings and it is to a great extent immune to normative control attempts. As regards the establishment or change of chaplain services this means that theological-ethical and organisational considerations should not be mixed up. Merely the decision if, to what extent and in what situations servicemen and their relatives receive special religious care can be disputed. The outward forms of this activity are derived from this and are already determined to a large degree.' (author's abstract)Viele der ehemaligen Ostblockstaaten wollen in ihrem Armeen Seelsorgedienste einrichten oder bestehende Dienste reorganisieren. In Hinblick auf dieses Vorhaben wird ein vergleichender Ueberblick ueber die weltweiten Konzepte der Militaerseelsorge gegeben. Die fuenf grossen Weltreligionen und weitere kleine Religionsgruppen aus 48 Staaten werden erfasst. Die Grundstrukturen ihrer kirchlichen Dienste werden herausgearbeitet. Sie verweisen auf das Problem der Dualitaet zwischen der Institution Kirche und der 'totalen Institution' des Militaers und deren beider Koordination. Die verschiedenen Militaerseelsorgekonzepte enthalten rein rituelle oder auch polizeiliche u.a. Aufgaben. Anhand eines Vergleichs wird ein 'Standardmodell' beschrieben, das weitgehend immun ist gegen normative Kontrollversuche. Fuer die Ethik-Diskussion bezueglich der Streitkraefte bedeutet das vor allem, dass theologisch-ethische und organisatorische Aspekte voneinander getrennt werden muessen.
