In the scope of the project, possibilities were to be shown how to reduce the pollutant emission of two stroke motored vehicles Trabant, Wartburg and Barkas B 1000. In addition to replacement of emission relevant components like ignition system and carburator, especially the installation of open loop catalysts was investigated. In order to gather knowledge about real-world suitability and life span of the installation long distance tests with eight vehicles were performed. The results show that equipment of the investigated vehicles with open loop catalysts is possible in principle, but vehicle specific high HC-emissions have to be considered, as expections for catalytic performance and life span are concerned.
