Samples were collected at 62 sites in forest areas of the pre-1990 F.R. of Germany. Geostatistical methods were used to select the sampling sites in cooperation with the forest administration of the various federal states. Guidelines for sampling and profile description were worked out and tested in the field. This was also done for analyses in the laboratory. Profile descriptions were made for all 62 sites and the collected samples were analyzed in the laboratory. The results show that the soil in most of the forests in Germany is moderately to highly acidic. Heavy-metal and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations were observed mainly in the surface organic layer and in the horizon immediately below that. The data were stored in a soil information system.
