1996 was again a very productive year at GSI with many remarkable advances in the experimental and technical programme. The most spectacular result came once more from the field of super-heavy elements. On February 9, 1996, the first nucleus of element 112 or, more precisely, of isotope "2"7"7112 could be detected by the SHIP-group at the UNILAC. Another remarkable success in the field of nuclear structure physics was achieved at the fragment separator. With the first identification of "4"5Fe and "4"9Ni with an isospin-value of T_Z=-7/2, a new record was reached on the proton-rich side of isotopes.
