Polygamy in the Old Testament as a problem

This bachelor thesis entitled "Polygamy in the Old Testament as a problem?", firstly deals with the general characteristics of polygamy. A definition of polygamy is outlined here, and there is also exploration of some psychological and ethnological views. The thesis also deals with the history of polygamy and its occurrence in the oldest civilizations and peoples, especially in ancient Israel. The second part of this work focuses on individual biblical stories that show polygamy. There is the first polygamy in the Bible at all and the stories of Patriarchs Abraham and Jacob, the leader of the Israelites Moses, as well as the kings of Israel David and Solomon. The work briefly summarizes individual stories within polygamy. The causes and consequences of polygamy are also set here, and the thesis also discusses whether the Bible or the author of the Bible explicitly or implicitly does not evaluate the occurrence of polygamy in these stories as a problem. The third part is devoted to the issue of the status of women in ancient Israel, but also in the surrounding peoples. Finally, in contrast to polygamy, monogamy is considered to be probably the only means of realizing romantic love. Keywords Polygamy - Monogamy - Old Testament - Status of women - Patriarchs - KingsAnotácia Táto bakalárska práca s názvom "Polygamia v Starom Zákone ako problém?", sa v prvej časti zaoberá všeobecnou charakteristikou polygamie. Vysvetľuje sa tu definícia polygamie a je tu tiež načrtnuté, aké stanoviská na polygamiu zastáva napr. psychológia či etnológia. Práca z časti pojednáva aj o histórii mnohoženstva a o jeho výskyte v najstarších civilizáciách a národoch, predovšetkým v oblasti starovekého Izraela. Druhá časť tejto práce sa sústreďuje na jednotlivé biblické príbehy, v ktorých sa objavuje polygamia. Hovorí sa tu vôbec o prvej polygamii v Biblii a ďalej sa tiež rozoberajú príbehy patriarchov Abraháma a Jákoba, vodcu Izraelcov Mojžiša a taktiež izraelských kráľov Dávida a Šalamúna. Práca stručne zhrňuje jednotlivé príbehy v rámci polygamie. Ďalej sa tu stanovujú príčiny a dôsledky polygamie a taktiež sa v práci pojednáva o tom, či Biblia resp. autor Biblie explicitne alebo implicitne nehodnotí výskyt polygamie v týchto príbehoch ako problém. Tretia časť je venovaná problematike týkajúcej sa postavenia žien v starovekom Izraeli, ale aj v okolitých národoch. Nakoniec je v práci na rozdiel od polygamie vyzdvihnutá monogamia, ako pravdepodobne jediný prostriedok na realizáciu romantickej lásky.
