The causes and the process of the War of 1812

The War of 1812 is sometimes called the second war for independence. The Americans fought for their rights; for the rights to neutral trade, which British government suspended because of the continental system of the French emperor Napoleon. United States were irritated by the British Orders in Council, which forbade Americans to trade with continental ports. Moreover they were angered by the practice of impressments. Royal Navy boarded and searched American ships for British seamen, who served on those ships because of better payment. The British navy was in a high need of men, so it took away from American vessels also American citizens without proper papers. Another cause of the War of 1812 was the British connection with N ative Americans. The War started with President Madison' s War message to the 12th Congress on June 1. Subsequently Congress declared war on Great Britain, and military forces invaded Canada - a British province. All American attempts for conquering British forts have failed during the first year of the war. Canada stayed strong just because of the fine leadership of Sir Isaac Brock and because of the help of Tecumseh's Indians. Americans gained just few naval victories. Právě obchodní kruhy místních přístavů nejvíce trpěly ekonomickými restrikcemi republikánské vlády a jejich vztah k Velké Británii byl právě díky obchodu pozitivní. Navíc státy severně od New Yorku patřily k baštám federalistické strany. Nespokojenost s washingtonským vedením a s celou válkou vedla v říjnu ke sjezdu předních politiků těchto států do Hartfordu v Connecticutu. Během prosincového a lednového zasedání se delegáti usnesli v tzv. Hartfordské konvenci,301 že pokud bude vláda porušovat státní suverenitu, mají tyto státy právo se od Unie odtrhnout. Nakonec konvence požadovala "jen" doplnit několik dodatků k ústavě Spojených států. Například obchodní embargo nemělo trvat déle než 60 dní, většina pro vyhlášení války měla být více než dvoutřetinová, prezidentské období mělo být pouze jedno a prezident nesměl být ze stejného státu jako jeho předchůdce. Ve Washingtonu vyvolala usnesení Hartfordského sjezdu silně protikladné reakce. Jeho delegáti byli označováni za zrádce a separatisty, ačkoli žádná smlouva o odtržení nikdy nevznikla. Hartfordský sjezd byl úzce spojen s federalisty, kteří na něj tvrdě doplatili; stal se pro ně jakousi "labutí písní". Po válce federalistická strana prakticky přestala existovat.
