This thesis is an analysis of the films of Michael Mann. The eleven films of this prominent Hollywood director are analysed in relation to existential philosophy and social engagement. The thesis establishes the case for Mann as an auteur, and identifies the philosophy on which this study rests. Through individual case studies of each of Mann's films, I argue that existentialism is explored within different social contexts that problematise the philosophy. The interrogation and problematisaticon of existentialism is performed by relating the philosophy to varying levels of social engagement, as some films present isolation and others illustrate community and social conscience.
