In the United States, demand eased somewhat in August from the high July level (see table 1b) in spite of the high level of industrial production (see graph 16). Middle distillates and heavy fuel oil contributed equally to the drop (see graphs 5 and 6). In Japan and Europe the downward trend of demand has continued (see graphs 1 and 2). This reflects weak economic activity together with a drop in demand for heavy fuel oil for electricity production resulting from good hydro-electric conditions and increased production of nuclear power
