LARGE PLASTIC DEFORMATION OF A STRUCTURE DUE TO IMPACT -AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON A PORTAL FRAME SUBJECTED TO IMPULSIVE LOADING, REPORT NO.1-

A preliminary test is performed for the study of large permanent deformation of thecolumns in a portal frame under horizontal impact loading. The column specimens aremade of mild steel and aluminum alloy plates. The impact load is applied by detonatingan electric blasting cap or by means of a ballistic pendulum. The force is measuredpiezo-electrically, and the impulse by the swings of a bifilar pendulum.
