From Harlem to High Street: Black and brown queer culture in menswear design

Good, human centred design answers to the needs individuals in societies while engaging a sense of purpose that matters. Fashion should not be any different. In the wake of the BLM movement, discussions about representation have finally expanded to the field of fashion. Artistic discussions about Blackness, Brownness and queerness are non-existent in Finnish academic institutions, therefore it relevant to dive into these topics as well. The first goal of this thesis is to generate discussion about Black and Brown queer representation and present its relevance in the context of fashion and design. This will largely represent the first, theoretical component of this thesis. The second goal is to create a menswear collection inspired by said representation. This will represent the artistic component of this thesis and it will also be the focus of this thesis. Commercialized depictions of marginalized people are often created by the dominant white culture. This applies to Black and Brown queer culture as well, and the cult-documentary Paris is Burning is a great example of trading Black and queer empowerment and self-care into spectacle for the white gaze. Black and Brown queer bodies are often seen and depicted as communal property of queer whiteness. Hence, the burden falls for Black and Brown (LGBTQ+ people) to be critical and ready to challenge everything. However, the issue of said representation is not just a question of critique. It is also about transforming the image and creating alternatives. This naturally applies to fashion as well: what types of designs subvert the norm? What kinds of visual representations pose critical alternatives? In this thesis, the concept of performing identities is being explored by creating a menswear collection inspired by vogue ball culture. In vogue balls – safe spaces for queer Black and Brown performance and entertainment dating back to the early 1900s – an important part are competitions of ‘realness’ where a contestant is dressed and acting as realistically as possible in a given category. Through this idea, a subverted version of classic heterosexual, white American archetypes will be created. These archetypes, the cowboy and the business man, perfectly encapsulate the essence of the patriarchy that dominates marginalized cultures and are therefore ideal for the visual repurposing of elements like a double breasted power-suit, cowboy boots or masculine, fringed jackets. The result of this thesis is a menswear collection of 8 looks, where queer Black and Brown bodies are criticizing dominant hegemonies through subversion of clothing and fashion imagery. In conclusion, the goals of the thesis were met, however there is space for a deeper discussion of queer theories within the themes of this thesis. Considering the non-existent preceding academic discussion about the thesis topic, this entity can be seen as a valuable conversation starter.Hyvä, ihmiskeskeinen design vastaa yksilön tarpeisiin luoden samalla emotionaalista merkityksen tunnetta. Tämä palvelumuotoilusta tutumpi ajatusmalli pätee myös muotiin. BLM-liikkeen ja sen arvojen noustua julkiseen keskusteluun, vakavasti otettavat keskustelut representaatiosta ovat vihdoin tulleet myös muodin pariin. Taiteellisesti kunnianhimoiset keskustelut mustuudesta, rukseudesta ja queernessista ovat käytännössä olemattomat kotimaisissa akateemisissa instituutioissa. Tästä johtuen aihe on vuonna 2020 ajankohtainen ja tärkeä. Tämän opinnäytteen ensimmäinen tavoite on avata keskustelua mustasta ja ruskeasta qeer representaatiosta ja esittää sen relevanssin muodin ja designin kontekstissa. Tämä edustaa opinnäytteen ensimmäistä, teoreettista osuutta. Opinnäytteen toinen tavoite on luoda miestenvaatemallisto edellä mainitusta representaatiosta inspiroituneena. Tämä edustaa opinnäytteen produktiivista, taiteellista osuutta ja se on myös tämän opinnäytetyön painopiste. Kaupalliset tavat kuvata marginalisoituja henkilöitä on useimmiten luonut valtaa pitävä valkoinen kulttuuri. Tämä pätee myös kuvauksiin mustasta ja ruskeasta queer-kulttuurista. Kulttidokumentti Paris is Burning on malliesimerkki siitä, miten rodullistettu ja queer voimaannuttaminen käännetään valkoista katsetta palvelevaksi leiväksi ja sirkushuviksi. Mustat ja ruskeat queer-kehot kuvataan useimmiten jonkinlaisessa omistussuhteessa valkoiseen queer-hegemoniaan. Tästä johtuen mustien ja ruskeiden queer-henkilöiden vastuulle jää usein kohtuuttoman kriittinen suhtautuminen kaikenlaiseen representaatioon. Representaatiossa ei kuitenkaan ole kyse vain kulttuurikritiikistä. Kyse on myös julkisen kuvan ja narratiivin muuttamisesta ja uudelleenkerronnasta. Tämä pätee myös muotiin: Horjuttavatko suunnitellut tuotteet normia? Minkälaiset visuaaliset representaatiot esittävät rakentavia, mutta kriittisiä vaihtoehtoja? Tässä opinnäytetyössä tutkitaan ajatusta identiteettien performanssista, luomalla miestenvatemalliston joka on inspiroitunut vogue ball kulttuurista. Vogue balleissa – historiallisesti rodullistetuissa queer tanssi- ja performanssitapahtumissa – ovat keskiössä ‘realness’ -kilpailut, joissa osallistujat pukeutuvat ja käyttäytyvät mahdollisimman vakuuttavasti annetun kategorian mukaan. Tämä ajatus luo inspiroivan alkuasetelman tavoitteelle luoda uudelleentulkittu, queer-versio amerikkalaisesta bisnesmiehestä ja cowboysta, kahdesta klassisesta, valkoisesta heteroseksuaaleista arkkityypistä. Patriarkaattia täydellisesti edustavat hahmot tarjoavat erinomaiset rakennuspalikat subversiolle, jota opinnäytteessä haetaan. Opinnäytetyön lopputulos on 8 lookin miestenvaatemallisto, jossa musta ja ruskea queerkansa kritisoi dominoivia hegemonioita antamalla stereotyyppisille maskuliinisille vaatekappaleille uuden merkityksen. Opinnäytteen päätelmä on, että sen tavoitteet saavutettiin, mutta teoreettisessa osuudessa olisi ollut tilaa syvemmälle tulkinnalle queer-teorioista opinnäytteen teemojen näkökulmasta. Ottaen kuitenkin huomioon täysin olemattoman vertaisaineiston, tämä opinnäyte voidaan nähdä arvokkaana keskustelunavauksena
