Boire pour entrer en transe : l’ivresse du chamane dans les Andes boliviennes

States of Inebriation and Trance. The Inebriation of the Shaman in the Bolivian Andes. Drunk, the curandero – the Andean Quechua shaman – acquires powers that allow him to see into the future, to bestow good or bad fortune and to communicate with the spirits of the dead and of an anthropomorphized nature. Inviting these spirits to drink with him, the curandero partially belonging to their world and is sometimes considered to be a demon. Yet it is this difference from the rest of humanity that allows the shaman to enter into an intrinsically sacrificial ethylic state of trance, in which he experiments a transfiguration of his body and his psyche and enters into a wholly transformed environment. These altered perceptions, nervetheless, lead to a deterioration of both his health and his social relationships. Based on an ethnography conducted with two curanderos of the Bolivian Andes, I describe the sensory exaltation and the behavioral modification brought about by inebriation, analyzing the metamorphosis they experience through the theoretical framework of embodied cognition.Ivre, le curandero, le chamane andin quechua, acquiert des pouvoirs qui lui permettent de voir dans le futur et de provoquer chance ou malchance mais également d’entrer en communication avec les esprits de la nature anthropomorphisée et les morts, eux aussi conviés à boire. S’il peut le faire, c’est parce que pour une part il appartient à leur monde : différent du reste des humains, il est parfois considéré comme un démon. Dans cet état de transe éthylique intrinsèquement sacrificiel – qui induit une dégradation de sa santé et une altération de ses relations sociales –, ce dernier expérimente une transformation de sa personne physique mais également de son psychisme, dans un environnement qu’il perçoit différemment. À l’aide d’une ethnographie réalisée auprès de deux curanderos des Andes boliviennes, je décris l’embrasement sensoriel et la modification du comportement que permet l’ivresse et je propose l’analyse de cette métamorphose à l’aide, notamment, du cadre théorique de la cognition incarnée.Geffroy Céline.
