El desvío del cauce del barranco de San Blas en Alicante: proyectos realizados desde 1721 hasta 1787

After the English troops took the city of Alicante and the Santa Barbara Castle in 1706, they constructed a big trench that enclosed the San Francisco district and the river bed of the Canicia gully, incorporating them into the city. This configuration of the walled city created a serious disadvantage for the buildings located next to the river bed and the commercial activity in the city. In 1772, the diversion channel, the project designed to divert the river bed of the San Blas gully to prevent its devastating effects, was completed. This singular engineering project –one of the few that were carried out in Spain due to Alicante’s peculiar climactic conditions– contained some defects that were the cause of the water returning to its original river bed on various occasions. This article analyses the projects that were carried out between 1721 and 1787 and the continued disputes between military engineers and the Port Authority that urged the demolition of the big trench.Tras la toma de la Plaza y Castillo de Santa Bárbara de Alicante en 1706 las tropas inglesas construyeron un trincherón que encerraba en su interior el arrabal de San Francisco y el cauce del barranco de Canicia. El recinto amurallado así conformado supuso un grave inconveniente para las edificaciones intramuros próximas al cauce y la actividad comercial de la ciudad. En 1772 se llevó a cabo el proyecto del desvío del cauce del barranco de San Blas para evitar sus devastadores efectos. Esta singular obra de ingeniería –una de las pocas que se hicieron en España por las peculiares condiciones climáticas de Alicante– se realizó con algunos defectos que originaron que las aguas volvieran a su cauce original en varias ocasiones. Este artículo analiza los proyectos que se realizaron desde 1721 hasta 1787 y las continuas disputas entre ingenieros militares y el comercio del puerto, que instaba a que se derribara el trincherón
