In order to prevent damage to fortifications in Alicante, the San Blas gully was diverted in 1772. This singular piece of engineering was completed with certain defects, mainly concerning the embankment built to block off the old water course. On several occasions water from both the San Blas and Canicia gullies caused damage to the San Carlos bastion, the Bavel front, traders’ warehouses and other buildings.
