The Use of Historical Land Surveying and Mapmaking Methods in the Making of Reliable Digital Town Maps. A Case Study: Zwolle, The Netherlands

Técnicamente hablando es posible digitalizar cualquier fuente histórica e integrarla correctamente en nuevas (re-)construcciones. Pero cómo se relacionan éstas con la realidad original y cómo podemos valorar su confiabilidad? En cartografía digital la información histórica es raramente tenida en cuenta, contando además que los mapas históricos tienen sus propias limitaciones las cuales pueden conducir a reconstrucciones virtuales no fiables. Mediante investigación histórica del entrenamiento de topógrafos en el pasado y de la fabricación de mapas podríamos entender cómo pueden producirse errores. La meta es reducir manipulaciones técnicas y visualizarlas donde sea necesario. Mediante un caso de estudio en la ciudad holandesa Zwolle, se demostrará la confiabilidad de técnicas históricas de levantamiento topográfico, cartográfico y las implicaciones metodológicas para el desarrollo de planos digitales de ciudades. La investigación se encaja en el programa de investigación: "Ciudades de papel y ciudades virtuales: Nuevas metodologías para el uso de fuentes históricas en cartografía urbana virtual", financiado por la Organización Holandesa para la Investigación Científica (NWO).Technically speaking it is possible to digitize all historic sources and integrate these seamlessly into new (re-)constructions. But how do these (re-)constructions relate to the original and how can we asses their reliability? Cartographers of digital maps seldom take historical information into account. Historical maps have their own limitations which can lead to unreliable virtual reconstructions. By historical research of the training of land surveyor and of the making of maps we might understand how errors occur. The aim is to reduce technical manipulations and to visualize them where they are necessary. At the case study of the Dutch town Zwolle the reliability of historical land surveying techniques /maps and its methodological implications for the development of digital town plans will be demonstrated.
