Bu makale, “Early Sufism Between Persecution and Heresy” adıyla, Islamic Mysticism Contested, (ed. Frederick De Jong-Bernd Radtke, Leiden 1999) adlı eserin 45-67 sayfaları arasında yayımlanmıştır.Bu çalışma, ilk asırlarda o dönemdeki politik çevrelerden ziyade tasavvufun içinden tasavvufa yönelik karşı çıkışı açıklamaya çalışacaktır. Bu hipotezin ana hatları, bir ön çerçeve olması amacıyla, tasavvufun kendi içindeki değişimin esasları üzerinde çizilecektir. Buna göre sûfîler, hem yaşadıkları toplum hem de ulemâ ile çatışmalarına neden olan üst düzey bir mentalite geliştirmişlerdir. Zühdü ve mistisizmi savunanlar arasında sûfîlerin içsel çekişmeleri, devlet güçlerini tasavvufun kendi içindeki çatışmaya çekmiştir. Bu husus, bir dizi uygulama ve zulümle sonuçlanmıştır. Sonuç olarak, ilhâd olarak görülen tasavvuf anlayışına yönelik bazı tartışmalar, farklı fıkhî mezheplere bağlı sûfîler arasındaki şiddetli çekişmelerde kök salmış olabilir. Bu arada ilhâdla ilgili diğer suçlamalar, şiî düşüncenin bir bütün oluşturacak biçimde sûfîlerin Kur’ân yorumlarına katılmasından kaynaklanmış görünmektedir.This Paper tries to explain the opposition to Sufism in its early centuries from within Sufism, rather than from the political circumstances of the time. By way of a preliminary framework, it outlines the hypothesis that, on the basis of inner conversion, the Sufis developed an elite mentality bringing them into conflict with both the society at large and the learned scholars of Islam. It suggests that the inner Sufi rivalry between champions of asceticism and champions of mysticism drew the forces of government into the conflict within Sufism, resulting in court procedures and persecution. Finally it tries to document that some polemics against Sufism as heresy may be rooted in a struggle between Sufis who were allied with different schools of Islamic law, while other accusations of heresy seem to derive from the integration of Sî’î ideas into Sufi Qur’ân commentaries
