Being an exception during Colonial times, war alliances between the Chiriguano and the Toba of Pilcomayo River became common during the second half of the 19th century in order to deal with the pressing colonization. For the Chiriguano that fled this Colonial offensive, the Gran Chaco became a refuge. These alliances did not survive their final defeat in 1874.
