Water management in a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell is one of the critical issues for improving fuel cell performance and durability, and water transport across the gas diffusion layer plays a key role in PEM fuel cell water management. In this work, we investigated the effects of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) content and the application of a micro-porous layer (MPL) in the gas diffusion layer (GDL) on the water transport rate across the GDL. The results show that both PTFE and the MPL play a similar role of restraining water transport. The effects of different carbon loadings in the MPL on water transport were also investigated.
