Understanding the liquid water transport behaviour in a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell is key to achieving high performance. The gas diffusion layer (GDL) provides transport pathways for electrons, reactant gases, and product water. However, when liquid water accumulates within the pores of the GDL, the effective porosity of the material is decreased, resulting in a reduced effective diffusivity of reactant gases. This can lead to reactant starvation at the catalyst during high current density operation, causing significant efficiency losses.
