Restoration of the Conventico Caves in Melilla

[EN] The citadel of Melilla, an example of military architecture that reached its greatest splendour in the 17th century, was declared a Monumental Ensemble in 1953. There are vestiges of underground architecture from the last third of the 18th century which have played an important role as a refuge since then. The restoration of the ruins of Cuevas del Conventico was initiated in 1990, because their state of repair posed a threat to the citadel. The studies, maps and project carried out by the team captained by the architect Javier Vellés display enormous sensitivity and constitute a strong, cultured image that melds in with the Melilla landscape and contributes to its characterization on its 5th Centenary.[ES] La Ciudadela de Melilla, ejemplo de arquitectura militar que alcanza su máximo apogeo en el siglo XVII, fue declarada Conjunto Monumental en 1.953. En el último tercio del siglo XVIII existe constancia de una arquitectura subterránea que desempeña desde entonces un papel importante como refugio. La gravedad de las consecuencias que la ruina de las Cuevas del Conventico hubiera tenido para la Ciudadela, aconsejó en 1.990 su restauración. Los estudios, levantamientos gráficos y proyecto realizados por el equipo encabezado por el arquitecto Javier Vellés muestran una exquisita sensibilidad, aportando una imagen construida, culta y potente que se integra con el paisaje melillense y contribuye a caracterizarlo en su Vº Centenario.Vellés Arquitectos, E.
