The poet’s erotic desire depends on water, in order to leave the human world and find the heavenly island where he could protect his love (« L’Invitation au Voyage »). On the other hand, water will mirror the poet’s despair, destined to love the corrupted infernal woman (« Moesta et Arrabunda ») or envisage a vampire Venus who will assure him only a gibbet to contemplate his victimized self (« Un voyage à Cythère »).
