Thomas Caskey, telephone interview by Kathryn Maxson and Robert Cook-Deegan, conducted from Durham, NC, 2 March 2012. Caskey directed the genome center at Baylor College of Medicine—a recipient of some of the first NIH HGP mapping and early sequencing grants—until 1994. (In 1996 this center became the Baylor Human Genome Sequencing Center, ultimately one of the five most productive sequencing centers of the HGP.) After leaving Baylor, Caskey became Senior Vice President, Human Genetics and Vaccines Discovery, at Merck Research Laboratories, where he oversaw funding for the Merck Gene Index Project. This initiative, a partnership with Washington University in St. Louis, used Merck funds to place EST sequences in the public domain for research and development.
