From 1995-1998, Yoshiyuki Sakaki, formerly of the University of Tokyo, was a leader on the four-team Japanese Human Genome Sequencing Project funded by the Japan Science and Technology Corporation (JST) of the Science and Technology Agency (STA). In 1998, this effort was relocated to RIKEN, the most prestigious research institution in Japan, and consolidated under the sole leadership of Sakaki until the completion of the HGP.
