is of a high quality. Costs for simple work by local contractors are obviously lower such as for the D.P.S. extension which cost about 200-300 per sq.m. The report ended with the information that further funds were being sought to cover the remaining 40% of costs not yet covered and that the Kresge Foundation would be approached agafn despite two rejections of funding requests. 4. The Sheikh Rihan Villa Mr. Morgan said that the renovation of the Villa was probably going to be more expensive than the estimated $1.5 million and that an up-dated estimate was going to be made at the end of the final design stage which is imminent. As yet there is no conclusive estimate. The reason for the added expenses is that the furnishings which are being chosen to maintain the original feeling of the Villa are obviously more expensive than more standard varieties. There is however an option in the contract to re-design at a lower budget figure if necessary. The preservation of the building is not legally required but it was decided that aesthetically pleasing preservation was the best approach. Further costs were going to occur as a result of the plan to install a full preservation laboratory for the Library. The extra equipment required could cost up to $250,000 and maintenance of a controlled atmosphere to protect the books would also be expensive. The structural integrity of the building has so far proved to be sound although it is a massive task bringing it up to standard as both new plumbing and new wiring are required. There will also be the possibility of later erecting an additional building on the site as the Villa only occupies 55% of the land. Nearby sites are also being investigated to provide warehouse and garage space for AUC.
