He went on to suggest that this May the Board would be in a position to achieve the IIA average even if the Egyptian pound was devalued to 3LE to the dollar. Mr. Hannon asked Dean Gibson to explain how he "sells" the AUC compensation package during the recruitment of new American faculty. Dean Gibson replied that the salary scale is based on experience rather than on quality or on differing levels according to discipline. For that reason, AUC has few American or foreign hire faculty in the science, management or engineering departments. Dean Gibson noted that the Trustee supplements helped bring in some good faculty, but that it was still insufficient to bring the best American faculty to AUC. Dean Gibson agreed that reaching 1003 of the !IA average would certainly help his recruiting efforts. Mr Hyde addressed the "quality of education" issue by focusing on the proportion of part-timers teaching at AUC. Dean Gibson remarked that one third of AUC instruction is conducted by part-timers and that of the remaining two thirds, only 293 is taught by American or foreign faculty. Mr. Hannon proposed that the Board address the major issues of faculty compensation, the structure of the salary scale, and the differential between the salaries of American and Egyptian faculty in one package now that the University has achieved a level of financial stability. Amb. Eilts concurred, but noted that such a package would take some time to work out while in the meantime, the University urgently needs some steps to be taken. President Pedersen suggested that the Board might be able to increase all salaries by 203 this spring, increasing the local faculty salaries by a slightly larger increment as well as increasing the number of new faculty hired. Dean Gibson responded that by then it would be too late to recruit for the coming academic year and that the time was now to decide whether or not to increase the number of new faculty. He said that the rigidity of the sala~y structure, the governance structure and the academic structure of the University created a straightjacket for ensuing administrations and that it would be up to the new President to deal with these related issues all at once.
