-2- Richard Bartlett asked if these programs were primarily for undergraduate students, and Mrs. Bartlett answered that that was generally true, although there are also graduate ' students attending, especially in the language area. She said that in one respect the "easiest and best" type of program is the Year Abroad. Dr. Pedersen also mentioned the intern program as being particularly successful in helping to increase positive awareness of AUC. He also stated that AUC is very interested in pursuing joint programs, such as the one with the University of South Carolina in management, and that management would . seem to qe an excellent academic -vehicle right now, Mrs. Bartlett inquired of the Associates about their own colleges and universities, and commented -about various past experience with each. Mr. Chorbal mentioned he was a graduate of Catholic University, and Mrs. Bartlett stated that this was an institution which would seem to be a good prospect for students, but that all efforts had been unsuc­cessful up to this point. Mr. Chorbal said he would be happy to try to assist. 3. Mr. Reed then turned the Committee's attention to the next agenda item and asked Dr. Pedersen to talk about the Associates member­ship. He reviewed the paper which had been prepared and stated that both the New York and Cairo offices would try to come up with candidates for the group to review at its next meetings for those areas where there is currently no representation. Dr. Bartlett said that he would hold off talking to Teresa Barger until there was a clearer concept of the Associates' role. 4. Mr. Reed introduced the next agenda item and asked Dr. Pedersen to comment on Board issues at the May meetings. He stated tfiat the issue confronting a joint meeting of the Academic & Research and Finance Committees would be the University's retirement policy. He also said that he would be discussing the 1988-89 budget, particularly in terms of the large increase from $18 million this year to $28 million next year which he said was due in large part to a "book" increase since tuition is now carried at the full rate of $6,500 a year. He mentioned that a recommendation would be made fot salary increases at 10% to bring them more in line with recent U.S. increase~. Dr. Pedersen reviewed the capital expansion taking place and the proposed establishment of 3 new departments in Computer Science, Mass Communication, and Theater/Art/Film. He described the fundraising strategies for the next few years and the University's funding priorities as (1) raising the annual fund from $700,000 to about $2 million, with consequent staff additions, (2) raising $2.5 million for a new dormitory, and (3) raising $1 million for a library endowment fund. With respect to public relations, he stated that a paper had been prepared in Cairo for review by the Public Relations Committee on a public relations policy for AUC. In speaking of public relations, he said that recent tuition increases will have to be carefully handle d within the Egyptian commun­ity, and that in the U.S. he hopes to situate AUC as the stellar institution to deal with in the Middle East
