-6- Tuition for incoming Egyptian students will be increased again next year. The present average tuition for Egyptians is LE 180 (or $250) after sub­tracting financial aid. The Ministry of Education is thinking of esta­blishing a private university and the tuition being discussed is LE 1000 per student. A long discussion of tuition for both non-Egyptian and Egyptian students followed. The following points were made. When transportation, housing and living expenses are included, the cost per year for non-Egyptian students at AUC is approximately $6000. This is more than many public univer­sities in the United States with which we must compete for students; on the other hand some public institutions are reaching this level. The President said that he has made the present student body aware that tuition may be increased during their enrollment at AUC. It was the sense of the Board that tuition for Egyptian students is still very low and that it ought to be raised providing that satisfactory financial aid arrangements can be made for students who are presently enrolled and would be hurt by the increases, and for students who would otherwise be unable to attend AUC. The standards of AUC's incoming students continue to improve, and the prestige and desirability of AUC degrees continue to improve. Therefore the justification for increasing tuition con­tinues to grow. There was discussion of the fact that 75% of our student body is comprised of women. While this may moderate somewhat, the percentage will probably remain high because the best male students attend the national univer­sities to pursue popular courses such as engineering and medicine which are not available at AUC.
