I I - 2 ~ Trustees may wish to consider means by which the University can substantially increase its English teaching capacity. There is no other agency in the UAR now teaching English in the intensive and systematic way we are doing; our facilities are growing steadily and normally; and yet we only scratch the surface of the needs and opportunities presented to us. This challenge to expand English language teaching capacity steadily reappears in reviewing our day-to­day experience at AUC. B. STAFF. On the whole our staff is the best we have ever had. To be sure, there are soft spots. We are chronically weak in Economics; we have no u.S. journalist this year. Our Management Program is growing at such a rate that we face a challenge to secure strong Western management teachers in the years ahead. In English as a foreign language we need additional staff. But on the whole I would still make the generalization that we have the best staff we have ever had. We have largely done away with excessive reliance on part-time teachers. Of the 180 courses given in the first term, all but 25 are being given by full time staff members. Our regular staff consists of approximately 80 faculty members ranging from assistant instructor to full professor. Among these there -are 55 Ph.D.s). We have virtually no assistant professors, associate professors and full professors who are not Ph.Ds.) In addition we have 17 English language teachers in the E.l.I. (Much of our English language teaching 1s done by graduate students, American Fellows preparing M.A.s in English as a Foreign language. The 17 staff members in English are therefore only about half of our native speakers of English teaching 1n the E.l.I.) ••• /.
