Cairo at the same time. The trip was in fact arranged, and Dean Hoelscher arrived in Cairo on October 21. While in Cairo, Dean Hoelscher stated that he had had an opportunity to meet with Dr. Hussein Said, the former sequestrator of the University, Dr. Nezih Deif, Dr. Said's replacement, the two Dean~ of the University, various members of the faculty, and some of the students. Dr. Hoelscher felt that, while he had enjoyed all aspects of his visit, the highlight of his stay in Cairo had been his encounter with AUC students. He said that he found them attractive, interesting, and articulate, and that their views about AUC, Egypt and the Middle East represented quite a broad spread of attitudes. He said he was delighted to discover that the students he had encountered had a wide capacity to argue and discuss a variety of things not only with him, but also among themselves. Dur­ing one part of this encounter, Dean Hoelscher noted that there was an extremely lively discussion among the students as to what they con­sidered AUC's role to be as a higher educational institution in Cairo. He noted with interest that there seemed to be some unanimity among the students that the University should be increasingly involved in, and continuously relevant to, the needs of the existing situation in Egypt. While this was indeed a generalization, it was Dean Hoelscher's opinion that these students were implying the University should con­tinue even more vigorously its tradition of moving in pragmatic ways to meet the educational and other relevant needs of the society it served. -5
