`Appendix IV - e) Policy on Leaves of Absence April 4, 1959. Policy on Leaves of Absence 1. Reasons for Leaves s of Absence The primary purpose of the leave of absence is the strengthening of the University through the professional growth of the individual staff member. The theory of the leave of absence is that a periodic change to a new environment, which offers the opportunity for a period of study under the challenge of new ideas and persons and a release from the pressures of duties on the home campus, is a necessity if teachers, researchers, or educational e-lministrators are to continue to be fresh and creative in their tasks. In addition, because many of the staff (hereafter referred to as non-residents) are now residing away from their parental homes and their centers of professional interests and relationships, periodic leaves to maintain such ties are important for the well-being of the staff member and his family. These two principles, plus the recognition of the unusual travel expense that is almost inevitable for achieving these ends, govern the proposals stated below. Hz apes of Leaves of Absence Leaves of absence are considered a privilege extended to the staff member by the University, and are classified as follows: a. Sabbatical leave. b. Summer home leave. c. Leave requested by staff member for study, research, or a teaching assignment. d. Special assignment leave. (a). Sabbatical Leave. The University will grant a sabbatical leave to a staff member who has attained the rank of Assistant Professor or higher if he fulfills the following conditions: * 1. He must have completed six (6) years of service at the University or have served six years after a return from a previous sabbatical leave and must have been off ere and have accepted a three-year appointment bcginnin ; immediately after the termination of the leave of absence. 2. He must have presented to the President through the appropriate dean at least one year in advance of the leave an acceptable plan of study, research or instruction to be pursued during the period of his leave. The President will be advised on the plan by the Committee on Appointment, Improvement and Promotion. The sabbatical leave is granted for a term of one year at half salary or one-half year (not involvin more then one semester's absence from the University) at full salary. * A maximum credit of three years' service at the Instructor level may be allowed towards the first sabbatical leave
