The theory of the leave of absence is that a periodic change to a new environment, which offers the opportunity for a period of study under the challenge of new ideas and persons and a release from the pressures of duties on the ho me campus, is e necessity if teachers, researchers, or educational administratoes are to continue to be fresh and creative in their tasks. In addi-tioz:, because many of the staff are now resi_ding away From ;their parental homes arid their centers of professional interests and relationships, periodic leaves to maintain such ties are impertaelt for the well-being of the staff member and his family. The University will grant a sabbatical leave to a staff member who is on utenurcn*if he fulfills the follow.. ing conditions: 1. He must have completed six ( 6 ) years of service at the University after having attained tenure or after havinT returned from a sabbatical leave and must have been offered and have accepted a three-year appointment beginning immediately after the termination of the leave cf absence.** 2. He must have presented to the president through the appropriate dean at least one year in advance of the leave an ac-ceptable plan for study, research or instruction to be pursued during the period of his leave.
