The University Catalogue The University publishes its catalogue every two years. One is now ready for the press, to be published as of June, 1959. The last catalogue published was dated June, 1957. Many details of University operation have changed since this material was prepared but, until the new catalogue is published, it is the document that gives the best over-all view of the University. A supplement was publisher' i_n. 1958, bringing some rrgulations and the University calendar up to date. Perhaps the chief advantage of the catalogue arises from its descriptions of courses of study, organization of curriculum, regulations governing the educational operation, and the like, are always under study and subject to change. Any basic change in policy is always cleared, finally, with the Board of Trustees. XI Student Tuition and Expenses The total amount of money received from all student tuitions and fees during the last fiscal year (closing August 31, 1958) was L.E. 45,221. The total income from all sources for the year was h.E. 203,4/0. The percentage of income paid by the students was, therefore, 22%• Of the remaining 78% of University income, all but a few thousand pounds came from the United States of America. Of this amount 15% was income from endowment funds, 39% from general gifts and contributions, and the remainder was largely designated gifts for specific purposes (such as the conversion of Hill House from a hostel into a library), from individuals and foundations. The student in the University pays a little more than one—fifth of the cost of University operation; the rest is from current gifts and grants and income from past gifts. Asp.^endix VIII lists the fees and charges of the University, and gives the appropriate financial regulations. XII Financial Guarantees The solvency of the University is assured in several ways. First, the endowment funds of the University, in the possession of the Doard of Trustees and invested in America, total 4i2,124,216 (or L.E. 710,000), the income from which could be used to ,poet obligations of any remaining portion of a school year if no other sources were available. This is true even though the University has an accumulated indebtedness of $500,000, or L.E. 174, 240. Perhaps the chief assurance of financial solvency, however, lies in the large number of friends of the University throughout l America who, from the time of the founding of the institution, have boon its generous supporters. They believe in the University and its purposes, and have confident hope for Ecypt and the Middle East and can be relied upon to support the American University at Cairo. Raymond F. McLain Presiden
