-10- D. Language Instruction. As here considered, Language In-struction is distinct from instruction in literature. 1. English Language,. The English Language Institute should assume responsibility for all English Language instruction, includ-ing all Freshman and pre-Freshman sequences. Thus, English 101-102 will be a course in reading and composition, with the central pur-pose of teaching advanced communication skills; the readings will introduce the student to the various disciplines. The special study skills, at present taught in English 101, must be taught in the special course (mentioned below) required of all Freshmen and new students. The discipline of English Literature will be taught at the Sophomore level and above, English 201-202 will accordingly be entitled: Introduction to Literature. 2. Arabic Language. There should be an eventual merging of the efforts of the English Language Institute, and those of the Arabic Language program in the Department of Oriental Studies (School of Oriental Studies). The equipment, objectives, and techniques are similar. E. Special and Remedial Work. These are special problems raised by lack of adequate preparation for undergraduate level work in the secondary schools of the area. The problems will become more rather than less acute in view of increasing difficulties in English instruction; the level of other secondary instruction will probably remain the same. To meet this situation, the University should undertake the following: 1. For Freshmen and_New Students. All Freshmen and new students should be required during the first semester to take a course in basic study skills including outlining, paragraphing, note-taking, speed-reading, etc., and should be instructed in the VImechanics" of term paper writing. Stress should be laid on the value of good study habits and proper scheduling of time. No credit will be offered for this course. 2. For Students on Probation. All such students should be given the opportunity to improve their chances of graduation through counseling and, if necessary, remedial work (as a special course) in English. No credit will be offered for this course. Such special efforts, along with certain extra-curricular activities (informal lectures, recitals, play-readings, etc.), de-signed to offer language practice, should be done in consultation with the Office of Student Affairs because of the intimate relation-ship between academic effectiveness and the overall adjustment of the student to the University.
