e -5- fall administratively to the Division of Public Services, and will include the services as now rendered, such as: alumni relations, promotion, publicity, visae and passport services, etc. C. The Inter-cultural Approach. In view of the changing situation and context within which it must work, the University must throughout its entire program lay much greater stress on Arabic language and Arabic culture, thus speeding the development of an institution which reflects in both its staff and its student body its commitments to, and sympathetic understanding of, two areas of the world. The student must be trained towards a feeling of "at homen.ess" in the West, as well as in the Arab world and away from the disintegrative tendencies sometimes apparent in those trained largely in a foreign culture without the. benefit of a strong foundation in their own. Thus the University retains its reputation for good preparation for graduate work abroad and con-tributes to the easy readaptation to the Arab world of returning graduate students. The University also trains its undergraduates towards, rather than away from, a responsibility for their environ-ment and its problems. In terms of language, this implies the desirability of a high level of competence in both English and Arabic for each student. It implies courses in both languages aimed at developing in each language the vocabulary of each field of study, thus providing easy transfer not only of knowledge but also of thought processes from one language to another. The University has two distinctive sections which can jointly supervise instruction in the elements of each language, namely, the English Language Institute and the Arabic language program in the School of Oriental Studies. Further language learning must be carried on within each discipline as well as by the specialized departments of English and Oriental Studies, In terms of the broader aspects of culture the intercultural approach must make itself felt not only by teaching courses in both languages but also by the content of those courses. The curriculum must be further strengthened in the direction of offering courses directly applicable to the Middle East, particularly though not exclusively, in the humanities and the social sciences. In addition to the course offerings that are directly applica-ble to the Middle East, the "intercultural approach" should be ex-plicitly expressed in the course syllabi. Divisional personnel, and possibly interdivisional personnel, working in appropriate committees, should be asked to collate and to coordinate the course contents. D. Research and Other Creative Effort. The University must seek financial support for research and other creative effort (writing, painting, composing, etc.) not only for its own sake but also as a method of instruction. Research, moreover, relates the University to the larger world of scholarship. Possibly mor
