Tho program of A.U.C., with its expanding campus, strengthened staff, and top-flight relationships with the Egyptian Governmunt and other local leaders, plus our continuing affiliation with tho Protostant missionary enterprise, gives us a stratogie position second to nono. In our very ossonco and our daily adaptation to changing conditions we aro constantly on the exploratory fringes of the Advance toward which the mission boards are now making such groat effort. We'are providing a means whereby American overseas organizations of many kinds can obtain high-grade national personnel for their local óporations. Through our S.O.S. we are training all newcomers in the ways of the Arab and his language and traditions. Wo are influencing whole areas out of all proportion to the numbers of our students - and we must do so in ever new directions. 14. It is my conviction that we have an obligation, stemming from our rather unusual privileges and opportunities, to make the utmost constructive use of these advantages, plowing back into the field what we have received from it. Few Americans, relatively, have visited Egypt or A.U.C. Those who have, practically without excep-tion, are enthusiastic over the work we are doing and the need that it be done. The bigger the job, the bigger the man - and vice versa. Annually, we are challenged to outdo our previous efforts. Perhaps no one among us is able to wield such influ-ences for good, at home and abroad, as our own Charles R. Watson and John H. MacCracken and Charles C. Adams, who loft us this past year. Yet the task is ours. It is up to us to "grow from moro to more;." 15. By these means we seek to hold the torch passed us by the Founder of The American University at Cairo, the flame of which burns brightly in a Minuto that Council in Egypt recently adopted with rofuronco to Dr. Watson: Again, he is not gone. He is actually hero with us, except that we do not see the body, in which we used to recognize him. His presence will continue to pervade; this University as long as those of us who knew him continue to try to fulfill the ideals he sot before us. His monument is more than these buildings, more than the buildings we hope to see. His monument is the spirit that characterizes A.U.C. WARD N. MADISON Executive Secretar
