103 Lectures: These are fully covered in the excellent report of Hanna Eff., (Appendix A) Several points are to be noted especially. First; the hostility of the press to the University last year, instead of turning out to be ruinous to our work, proved to be a blessing in disguise. Not being :Able to get some of the more timid personalities to lecture, we struck out for bigger men (Appendix A, p.2) with the result that we have had one of our very strongest programs. Furthermore, the attempt at pay lectures was entirely successful, due mostly to the personality of the lecturer, Dr. Taha Hussein. That high grade audiences will pay for lectures that interest them, has been demonstrated. The popularity of the lectures was further enhanced by the attendance of certain political leaders, Mohammed Pasha Mahmoud, Nahas Pasha, William Makram, and several other ex-ministers. A second point to be noted is the rather steady decline in the average attendance at the free lectures. Beginning with the first year of Swart Memorial Hall, the average audiences have been as follows: '28-'29, 637; 1 29-'30, 625 ; '30-131, 570: '31-'32, 297; '32-'33, !` . So that although the newspaper attacks a year ago interfered, there has been some recovery during the past season, but still far short of two years ago. The decline in attend-ance may be attributed to several factors: (a) Ewart Hall is no longer the novel feature it used to be; (b) there are many more lectures being offered to the public by various organizations (Appendix A. p.4); (c) the hostile campaign against the University and missionary work generally, frightens timid persons away; (d) some of the lecturers have lost their early originalit and are no longer able to present their material with freshness. But a third fact of note is a change in the character of the audiences. Whereas our clientele here-tofore has consisted largely of students of higher and secondary schools, shown by the fact that a year ago subscribers were 1202 students and 1146 others, the season just ended showed 927 students and 1092 professional and other persons, meaning a slightly more serious-minded audience. The success of our pay lectures in attracting a better audience leads us to believe that this type can be success-fully developed to the point where they will bear a greater proportion of the expense than in the past. Forums: Making use of the new Oriental Hall, six forums on the general topic of Egypt's Population Problems were conducted. The first four were limited to a specially invited group, mixed Egyptian and European, including a number of officials. A paper of from 45 minutes to one hour in length was read by the Director, following the lines of his study on this subject, and then a discuss-ion followed, the total meeting occupying an hour and a half. The interest and attendance kept up well to the end. The participation of a number of high gov-ernment officials from the Statistical Department, and Public Health and the Public Security lent weight to the opinions expressed. Following the first four and at the request of some of the members, two other forums were held on the special topic of the Marriage .eroblem in Egypt. The admission of upper classmen from the College was a feature, as it brought these students directly into touch with some of the live problems of the country and the official persons who are dealing with them. By such forums, it is hoped to bring together persons 'of serious intention in the study of social problems, who Alay by their researches and discussions actually bring about movements for improvement in local conditions. Films: Practically all of the moving picture work was done as extra-mural. The "King of Kings" was exhibited to church audiences in Tanta, Alexandria, Abbassia, Assiut, Sohag, Quena, Assouan and Luxor (See Appendix B). We are glad to note that Mr. J. Milbank has kindly secured replacements for the reels that were worn out, so that this film can be kept alive for the inspiration of Egyptian Christians for some years to come. The chief uses of the "Save the Eyes" film were in Palestine, where the Department of Health secured the cooperation of the cinemas in Jerusalem, Jaffa and Tel Aviv to show a reel weekly as part of their regular programs.
