-2- 7. While compulsory chapel did me good, times have changed and voluntary chapel seems to be the thing for this generation. The Princeton plan is proving very successful. 8. Students do not get much out of compulsion, especially in matters of religion. You may compel students to attend chapel, but they won't get as much out of it as if it were voluntary. Then followed a discussion as to whether or not a course in the Life of Christ should be elective or compulsory: 1. The University must insist on this if it is to continue to function as a Christian institution. 2. The University should teach both the Life of Jesus and the Life of Mohammed. The difficulty would be to get a Moslem teacher who would teach the Life of Mohammed using the same open-minded meth-ods as are used in teaching the Life of Christ. 3. any educated man should know about the Life of Jesus. The course, therefore, should be compulsory. 4. The question is, can it be done? Will the government not raise as serious objections to our teaching the Life of Christ as to compulsory chapel? Will the students stand for compulsion in a course of this nature? 5. If the students will attend a class of this sort on a vol-untary basis, it is much better than compulsion. Here again the suc-cess of the program depends upon th._: man who has charge of it. 6. In the case of a few students whose families bitterly op-pose their sons' taking this course, exceptions might be made and some alternative course in the same field could be substituted. Mr. Lum was authorized to prepare a resolution which would represent the general consensus of opinion on the part o. the Trustees, on the subject of chapel. attendance and courses of religious study. The following is, the resolution: After listening to Dr. Watson's presentation of. the present situation in Egypt, we realize more fully than ever before the present sensitive feeling of the Moslems to the Christian religion, and their open hos-tility toward all direct Christian teaching. In view of these condi-tions, we recognize that it may become advisable, (certainly if the Egyptian Government should make it an issue) , to do in Egypt what al-ready has been done in China and India - to make attendance at distinct-ly Christian exercises and courses, voluntary, in order to eliminate the attitude on the part of the students of hostility toward the Christian character of the institution; an attitude which seems to be defeating the very purpose for which the University was founded. However, if such a voluntary policy is adopted, we urge upon the Univer-sity the necessity for being doubly concerned with preserving, in ways that prove most attractive to the students, corporate Christian worship and proper instruction in the life and teachings of Christ, both ofwhich seem to us to be essentials in the program of Christian education in a non-Christian land
