1 3 This required a recasting of the whole plan of promotion and accordingly the work was pushed along two main lines: (a) the cultivation of individuals, (b) smaller and introductory campaigns in Cleveland. and Minneapolis. It is most dif-ficult for the Secretaries who have been chiefly engaged in this work, to appraise accurately the results of their efforts. On the one hand, we cannot be content with progress that is too slow, for the Day of Opportunity to Moslem lands brooks no delay. On the other hand, there must be a reasonable appreciation of the diffi-culties involved in making the American public acquainted with a new project, the need of the element of Time in arriving at an interest that will bear fruitage in large giving. The Secretaries therefore wish to invite every member of the Board of Trustees into fellowship with them in these promotion activities and in the con-structive and yet frank criticism of the methods followed in that work. Only through the counsel, criticism and cooperation of all, can we campass our immense task. (8) Treasury: Since the Bronxville meeting, there have been paid into the Treasury some $18,662 in cash, about $13,622 on old pledges and $5,040 on new contributions. The cash contributions and the pledges that represent new assets since November 1, 1915, total $50,715 and this figure does not include several pledges made implicitly for a period of years, the contributors holding scruples against any form of pledge making. It is believed that these implicit pledges give reasonable ground for quoting the total increase of the University assets during the past year as $70,000. (.9) President and dean: It will be recalled that at the Bronxville meeting, Dr. Watson stated that in response to the invitation of the Trustees that he become Presi-dent of Cairo University, he was unable to give a final answer owing to the relation-ship he still sustained toward the other interests, especially the Board of Foreign Missions of the United Presbyterian Church. In May, 1916, Dr. Watson presented to the General i sembly of his Church his resignation from the Secretary-ship. This resigna-tion havi ')een accepted, the way was open for him to accept the invitation of the Trustees. His letter of acceptance accompanies this Report. At the Bronxville meeting an invitation was extended to President R. S. McClenahan of Assiut College to become Dean of the Collegiate Department of Cairo University. This invitation was presented to President McClenahan through the Board of Foreign Missions of the United Presbyterian Church and its Mission in Egypt. While no final reply has been sought or given, it may be reported informally that President McClena-han is considering the invitation with favor. (10) The Future: The program of the Secretaries for the immediate future is as follows: (a) Mr. George Innes will give as much time as his personal and business interests may permit during November, December, January and February to preparing for a campaign of promotion in Philadelphia. Certain names of international repute are under consideration and advisement. There is a possibility that Lord Bryce may be in this country for a number of interests and that his help might be secured in present-ing Cairo University to a selected list of Philadelphia's leaders. Plans are necessari-ly conditional upon the outworkings of some of these expectations. (b) Dr. Watson will be in Egypt from November 1916 to March 1917, engaged in the work of securing land for the University. III (c) In April 1917 both Secretaries plan to join forces in the campaign in Philadelphia. (d) A meeting of the Board will:undoubtedly necessary in the spring and should be planned for April or May 1917. It will be a most important and determining meeting
