"Herring from the first catch of the season are tipped by basket onto the conveyor and directly to the waiting truck. Ian McEachern (left), Wayne Birss, Jeff Westerberg, 'Dumpy' Wheatcroft and Erik Oldham form a team to contain part of the catch in the shallow water. The herring are caught in a net, which is set overnight, just off the beach in front of the shacks. The shoals swim along the shore line and into the net where they are contained overnight until the net is closed off in the early morning."--Notes from artist
