Kuinka suunnitella ja toteuttaa arkkitehtuurikasvatusta Espoon peruskouluissa

The subject for this master's thesis was suggested on the behalf of the city of Espoo in 2009. Architectural education has been included into the nationwide primary and middle school syllabus since 2004. Yet so far teachers haven't been capable of putting these words into action. The biggest problems have been the lack of time and funds, the absence of easily understandable architecture teaching material and the fact, that many elementary school teachers are frightened of the concept of architecture and don't know how to approach the theme. The methods for designing the architecture teaching material were found by interviewing elementary school teachers as well as by studying existing architectural education material in use of elementary schools and analyzing its strengths and weaknesses. Since the 1980's a few architectural teaching guides have been published and many projects have been established all around Finland. Even though the scene is scattered all seem to understand the significance of architecture education as a tool for understanding ones surroundings and culture. In Espoo this aspect is especially important, because the city's scattered town structure is difficult to understand as a whole. As a result of the assignment a web page called "Löytöretki Espoon arkkitehtuuriin" ("Expedition into Espoo's architecture") was created in OP1T, which is a virtual school hosted by WSOY. The material consists of separate pages for teachers and pupils. The pupils' website includes information and interactive exercises on eleven architectural sites in Espoo. On the teachers' website a manual, additional exercises and printable handouts can be found. The aim is that during elementary and middle school students become familiar with all architectural sites featured in the teaching program, which also brings the benefit of strengthening pupils' identity as citizens of Espoo. Another example of creative architecture education presented in this master's thesis is "We are building a city" -interactive architecture opera, exhibition and workshop for children.Aihe tälle diplomityölle tuli Espoon kaupungin suomenkielisen opetustoimen aloitteesta syksyllä 2009. Arkkitehtuurikasvatus on osa valtakunnallista opetussuunnitelmaa, mutta silti opetuksen toteutuminen käytännössä on ollut epävarmaa. Syynä tähän ovat muun muassa ajan, resurssien, sekä selkeän opetusmateriaalin puute. Lisäksi opettajilla saattaa olla ennakkoluuloja arkkitehtuurin opettamista kohtaan. Tämän diplomityön tarkoituksena on kartoittaa peruskoulussa tapahtuvan arkkitehtuurikasvatuksen haasteet ja luoda keinoja, joilla arkkitehtuuriopetuksen toteutuminen peruskouluissa helpottuu käytännössä. Työn tuloksena syntyi arkkitehtuuriaiheista opetusmateriaalia Espoon suomenkielisten peruskoulujen käyttöön. Opetusmateriaali lähestyy arkkitehtuurin teemoja Espoossa sijaitsevien arkkitehtuurikohteiden kautta. Opetusmateriaali muodostaa verkkosivuston, joka sijaitsee WSOY:n ylläpitämässä sähköisessä oppimisympäristössä, Opitissa. Materiaali sisältää interaktiivisia verkkotehtäviä, sekä kohteisiin liittyviä tulostettavia tehtävänantoja. Verkkosivusto sai nimekseen Löytöretki Espoon arkkitehtuuriin.
