Suunnittelutiedon arvon maksimointi tuotekehitysverkostoissa

Conducting product development collaboratively in company networks creates new requirenients for product data management, as product data have to be exchanged promptly with multiple partners. Electronic data exchange has become the main method of this communication. It is used to coordinate tasks and to share information of task execution in the network. Examples of such information include task descriptions and information of task changes and completions. The information is of high value to the network members, as the delegation of tasks between the companies can change as all the tasks are not known in the beginning. Therefore, it is impossible to cover every situation in contracts before they occur. It is easy to send product data from one company to another. However, the timing and accuracy of the information exchanged are extremely important. Errors and deficiencies in the information, as well as delays in change notifications cause unnecessary rework. Information that is sent too often and to too many recipients causes information overload for the recipients and can at worst paralyze their operations. The value of information comes from avoiding unnecessary rework and delays in the schedule, as well as from minimizing the costs of data exchange and data handling. This thesis attempts to solve the problem of not having the right information at the right time in the correct place when conducting product development in a company network. We have conducted four case studies on product data exchange in four product development networks. The results of our case studies reveal that the challenges are related mainly with the accessibility, timeliness, comprehensibility, and relevance of the information. The main contribution of this thesis is a definition of information value and a model of its maximization based on the definition. Information value comes from the costs avoided by having access to comprehensible and relevant information on time. The purpose of the model is to aid in designing flexible and efficient data exchange practices that guarantee the accessibility, timeliness, comprehensibility, and relevance of the information exchanged. The model is intended to be used in the beginning of a product development project conducted in a company network to optimize information value from the network perspective.Yhteistoiminnallinen tuotekehitys yritysverkostoissa tuo uusia vaatimuksia tuotetiedonhallinnalle, kun tuotetietoa täytyy vaihtaa ripeästi useiden partnerien kanssa. Elektronisesta tiedonsiirrosta on tullut pääasiallinen tiedonsiirtomuoto tässä yhteydessä. Sitä käytetään tehtävien koordinointiin ja niiden suorittamisesta raportointiin verkostossa. Esimerkkejä jaetusta tiedosta ovat tehtäväkuvaukset ja tieto tehtävien muutoksista ja valmistumisista. Tämä tieto on erittäin arvokasta verkoston jäsenille, koska tehtävien jako yritysten välillä voi muuttua kun kaikkia tehtäviä ei tunneta etukäteen. Tästä johtuen kaikkia mahdollisia tilanteita ei voida kattaa etukäteen sopimuksin. On helppoa lähettää tuotetietoa yrityksestä toiseen. Siirretyn tiedon ajoitus ja tarkkuus ovat kuitenkin erittäin tärkeitä. Virheellinen ja puutteellinen tieto sekä viivästykset muutostiedotteissa aiheuttavat turhaa lisätyötä. Liian usein ja liian monille vastaanottajille lähetetty tieto aiheuttaa vastaanottajilleen infoähkyä ja voi pahimmillaan halvaannuttaa heidän toimintonsa. Tiedon arvo tulee turhan lisätyön ja aikatauluviivästysten välttämisestä, sekä tiedon siirrosta ja käsittelystä aiheutuvien kustannusten minimoinnista. Tässä työssä pyritään ratkaisemaan ongelma, joka syntyy kun tuotekehitysverkostossa ei ole oikea tieto oikeaan aikaan oikeassa paikassa. Olemme tehneet neljä tapaustutkimusta tuotetiedonsiirrosta neljässä tuotekehitysverkostossa. Tapaustutkimusten tulokset paljastavat, että verkottuneen tuotekehityksen tuotetiedonhallinnan ongelmat liittyvät pääasiassa tiedon saatavuuteen. oikea-aikaisuuteen, ymmärrettävyyteen ja relevanssiin. Työn pääasiallinen kontribuutio on tiedon arvon määritelmä ja tähän määritelmään perustuva malli tiedon arvon maksimoinnista. Määritelmämme mukaan tiedon arvo tulee kustannuksista, jotka väitetään oikeaan aikaan saatavilla olevalla ymmärrettävällä ja relevantilla tiedolla. Mallin avulla voidaan suunnitella joustavia ja tehokkaita tuotetiedonsiirtokäytäntöjä, joilla varmistetaan siirretyn tiedon saatavuus, oikea-aikaisuus, ymmärrettävyys ja relevanssi. Mallia on tarkoitus käyttää yritysverkostossa suoritettavan tuotekehitysprojektin alussa tiedon arvon maksimoimiseksi verkoston näkökulmasta
