Punning jests in L. Carroll and A. A. Milne's writings: transference of meaning

Kalba yra galingas įrankis, egzistuojantis bet kokioje veikloje - net mąstydami mes ja naudojamės. Žmonės naudoja kalbą kryptingai siekdami tam tikro tikslo, norėdami perteikti informaciją ar bandydami sukelti tam tikrą atsaką. Viena vertus, dauguma žodžių bet kurioje kalboje turi daugiau nei vieną reikšmę, kas daro kalbą sudėtingesne, nes neteisinga prasmės interpretacija gali sukelti painiavą ir iššaukti atsaką, kardinaliai besiskiriantį nuo norėto. Kita vertus, tas pats kalbos polisemantiškumo ypatumas leidžia pasiekti tuos pačius tikslus keletu skirtingų būdų (skirtingais sakinių variantais), nes jis suteikia galimybę žaisti su įvairiomis žodžio reikšmėmis - naudojamos metaforos, paranomazija, ir daugelis kitų semantinės kaitos priemonių. Tačiau tikslūs būdai, kuriais kalba leidžia daryti įtaką kitiems (kad klausytojas ar skaitytojas pasijustu liūdnas ar laimingas, supyktu ar nusijuoktu) yra sunkiai pastebimi be gilesnės analizės. Todėl, šiuo tyrimu siekiama ištirti kalbos gebėjimo žaisti žodžių reikšmėmis semantines savybes, analizuojant kaip šie semantiniai pokyčiai sukelia humoro jausmą. Tyrimas remiasi Neatitikimų teorijos idėja, teigiančia, kad žmogaus psichologiniams modeliams ir lūkesčiams neatitinkant realybę, jis ar ji patiria humoro jausmą ir jaučia situacijos juokingumą. Kitaip tariant, žmogui augant, formuojasi psichologiniai modeliai ir yra kaupiamos tam tikros patirtys, o kuomet jos yra pažeidžiamos, pavyzdžiui, žodis yra pavartojamas netikėtame ir netipiškame kontekste, tai keičia paties žodžio prasmę, neatitinka žmogaus lūkesčių kylančių iš turimos patirties, ir tuomet, suvokėjas (skaitytojas arba klausytojas) patiria visą sakinio humoristiškumą. Tačiau ryšys tarp stilistinių priemonių sudarytų reikšmės perkėlimo pagrindu ir humoro nėra lengvai pastebimas. Dėl šios priežasties šis santykis vis dar lieka retai pastebimas skaitytojų. Todėl tyrime buvo iškeltas klausimas – kaip reikšmės perkėlimas prisideda prie humoristinio efekto sukūrimo L. Kerolo ir A.A. Milno kūryboje? Šiam pagrindiniam tyrimo klausimui atsakyti, buvo iškeltas tikslas išanalizuoti reikšmės perkėlimo semantinį reikšmingumą humoro literatūroje vystymosi procese. Jis buvo pasiektas per šių keturių uždavinių įvykdymą: (1) sukurti leksinių stilistinių priemonių, sudarytų reikšmės perkėlimo pagrindu ir sukeliančių humoro poveikį, aprašą; (2) atlikti gautų duomenų semantinę analizę kontekste, atkreipiant dėmesį į reikšmės perkėlimo tipą ir humoro, kurį jis sukelia, pobūdį; (3) nustatyti ir paaiškinti reikšmės perkėlimo poveikį humoristinių pokštų mechanizmams; (4) pateikti detalų humoro plėtros L. Kerolo ir A.A. Milno kūryboje palyginimą ir nustatyti jų kūrybos ypatumus. Šis tyrimas buvo grindžiamas kokybiniu požiūriu. Buvo atlikta leksinių stilistinių priemonių sudarytų reikšmės perkėlimo pagrindu ir sukeliančių humoro jausmą semantinė analizė. Lyginamoji analizė buvo taikyta siekiant nustatyti reikšmės perkėlimo skirtingų temų plėtojime panašumus ir skirtumus, kad išsiaiškinti, kaip jie paveikia humoro jausmo sukėlimo procesą. Ypatingas dėmesys buvo skiriamas enciklopediniam ir situaciniam kontekstams, siekiant nustatyti konteksto vaidmenį teisingos reikšmės pasirinkimo procese, kilus dviprasmiškai situacijai. Tyrimas parodė, kad reikšmės perkėlimas buvo būtinas tam, kad sukelti humoro efektą: abu autoriai naudojo paranomaziją, ironiją ir sarkazmą, siekdami sukurti skaitytojams juokingas situacijas. Tyrimas patvirtina Neatitikimo teorijos prielaidas, kad humoras atsiranda kuomet visiškai nesuderinami dalykai yra apjungiami arba palyginami, tuo pačiu pažeisdami žmogaus psichologinius modelius ar lūkesčius, kurie nebesutampa su realybe. Taip pat tyrimas pateikia papildomus įrodymus konteksto-priklausomybės hipotezės egzistavimui, kadangi parodė, kad sprendžiant dviprasmiškus neaiškumus, kontekstas atlieka pagrindinį vaidmenį padėdamas skaitytojui pasirinkti tinkamiausia žodžio prasmę. Taigi, tyrimas atskleidžia naujas reikšmės perkėlimo reiškinio ir jo įtakos semantiniams humoro ypatumams perspektyvas. Atlikus paronomazijos ir kitų leksinių stilistinių priemonių analizę, šis tyrimas parodė, kad reikšmės perkėlimas tiesiogiai dalyvauja humoro efekto sukūrimo literatūroje procese; prisideda jau prie esamos idėjos, kad abu reiškiniai (reikšmės perkėlimas ir humoras) yra glaudžiai susiję; bei praplečia susijusias su šiomis sąvokomis žinias.Language is a powerful tool present in any activity even in the form of thoughts. According to the Relevance Theory, people use language purposefully in order to achieve a particular aim, convey information or elicit a certain response. On one hand, many words in any language are polysemous which makes the use of language more complex and challenging phenomenon, since wrong interpretation of the meaning may cause confusion and elicit completely different effect from the one that was targeted. On the other hand, the same polysemous peculiarity of the language makes it a richer tool for the same purposes, because it provides the possibility to play with those various meanings of the word – use metaphors, puns and many other instances of semantic change. However, the precise ways in which language makes it possible to influence others (to make the listener or reader feel sad or happy, angry or amused) are hardly noticeable on the surface. Therefore, the present research aims at exploring the semantic properties of the language ability to play upon meanings analysing how such semantic changes evoke one’s humorous response. The study supports the idea of the Incongruity Theory that violation of one’s mental patterns or combination of two incongruous things may evoke humorous amusement. Thus, the research adopts the view that while growing up, people develop particular mental patterns of everything around them. Hence, when such patterns are violated, for example, the word is put into unexpected context that changes the whole meaning of a sentence, the perceiver (reader or a listener) is amused. Accordingly, the aim of the research was to analyse the semantic contribution of the transference of meaning to the process of evoking humour in literature. It was achieved through the completion of the following objectives: 1. To create an inventory of the lexical stylistic devices that result from the transference of meaning and elicit humorous effect; 2. To carry out the semantic analysis of the obtained data within the context, paying attention to the kind of transference of meaning and the humorous effect that it elicits; 3. To establish and explain the contribution of the transference of meaning to the mechanisms of humorous jests; 4. To provide a vivid comparison of the development of humour in works of L. Carroll and A.A. Milne and to define peculiarities of their writings. The present research was based on the qualitative approach. The semantic analysis of the lexical stylistic devices based on the transference of meaning and eliciting humorous effect was carried out. Comparative analysis was used to determine similarities and differences of the usage of transference of meaning in the development of various themes and topics throughout the text, to find out how the semantic changes affect the process of eliciting humorous amusement. Particular attention was paid to the encyclopaedic and situational contexts in order to define the role of the context in the choice of the primary meaning, while solving an ambiguous situation. The research demonstrated that the transference of meaning was necessary to evoke humorous effect: both authors used puns, irony and sarcasm in order to elicit amusement of the readers. It confirms the assumptions of the Incongruity Theory of humour that humour in general, seems to arise from the perception of initially incongruous things being put together or compared and often results from the violation of one’s mental patterns. It may also provide additional evidence for the context-dependency hypothesis, showing the significance of the context in the choice of meanings, while solving the ambiguities, since in many cases situational and encyclopaedic context were required to interpret the meaning of a confusing ambiguous word and choose the most suitable one. Therefore, the relevance of the research is that the idea of the language contribution to humour and amusement is not yet vividly researched and this study sheds new light on the phenomenon of transference of meaning and its influence on the semantic properties of humour. Through the analysis of paronomasia and other lexical stylistic devices, this study suggests that transference of meaning is directly involved in the process of evoking humorous amusement; contributes towards the already existing idea that both phenomena are closely connected, and extends the knowledge of these notions. However, further studies with particular attention to the psychological aspects of humour must be conducted in order to find out how language creates humour in general.Švietimo akademijaVytauto Didžiojo universiteta
