The mother of Jesus figures in the sacred texts of both Christianity and Islam. While the accounts of her differ, these two Abrahamic religions concur in their acknowledgement of Mary/Maryam as a woman of faith. This paper identifies and provides some accessible and relevant background to this woman with the aim of promoting a reflection on the role and significance of the person and symbol of Mary/Maryam and the implications for understanding the place of Jesus in these different religious traditions. Teachers may find this paper particularly useful as background pertinent to inter-faith dialogue and Studies of Religion courses
