Oh, a ship was a-sailing in another country

A merchant vessel is threatened by pirates. The captain entices the hero to scuttle (sp?) the pirate vessel by offering various rewards. When the hero has performed the task, the captain then reneges on his offer and instead leaves him to drown. The crew finally bring him aboard, where he dies of exhaustion.
