Full exterior view of Second Parish Orthodox Presbyterian Church, 371 Congress Street, from west, at the southwest corner of Pearl Street and Congress Street (between Pearl Street and Myrtle Street). Portland Fire Department Central Station at lower right corner of image.The church was built in 1875, as a memorial to Dr. Edward Payson (1783-1827). Payson had been pastor of the earlier Second Parish (Middle Street at Deer Street) which had been destroyed in the Great Fire of 1866. The church on Congress Street was demolished in March 1965 (with Gannett Publishing Company purchasing the land for its corporate expansion), a year after the Second Parish congregation relocated to 32 Neal Street.
