Ashtabula County\u27s commitment to the politics of antislavery was built upon unqualified belief in the greatness of the American system of government as expressed in the Constitution and realized by a free and hardworking Northern society. It was also based on an equally vociferous rejection of slavery and Southern life as inhumanely degrading, elitist and antidemocratic, un-Christian, and antimodern. The unfettered opportunity of the individual to prosper was what America had fought the Revolution for and created the Constitution to protect.
