The reclamation history of the Colorado River basin is extensive and only works bearing reference to developments in the upper basin are cited. James (1917) emphasizes the Colorado and he is one of the few authors on the subject who recognizes the place of J. W. Powell in western reclamation. Williams (1951) treats of water development on five western rivers. A number of works primarily concerned with the lower basin of the Colorado, appearing before or after the Boulder Canyon Project Act of 1928, or relating to that project, contain historical material of real value: Kleinsorge (1941) and Force (1936) are examples. The publication issued by the Colorado River Commission of California (1931) contains chronologies, documents, bibliographies. See also the historical report on the Boulder Canyon project issued by the Bureau of Reclamation (1949). Freeman and Bolster's paper (1910) is the earliest comprehensive description of the water supply of the Colorado River basin based upon the actual measurements made by the Geological Survey. E. C. LaRue's paper (1916) contains a chronology of river exploration to 1911 and a list of publications of the Geological Survey and other reports bearing upon the river. The annual reports of the Reclamation Service (1902- ), which began investigating the Colorado River in 1904, contain periodic record of the operations of that agency. Compare the summary report of Whistler (1919) with that of LaRue. LaRue's second report appeared in 1925 and was supplemented in papers by Follansbee (1929) and Woolley (1930) for the canyons above Glen. The progress of studies by the Bureau of Reclamation was summed up by F. E. Weymouth, Chief Engineer, in a manuscript of nine volumes entitled Report on the Problems of the Colorado River Basin, dated 1924. I have not seen the report but it is partly summarized by Malone (1929), State Engineer of Nevada. There have been numbers of publications relating to the Colorado River issued by agencies of the basin states beyond those noted here.
