Beyond the article by Paul Jones (1959), Chairman of the Navajo Tribal Council, I have found no satisfactory reference to the history of reclamation by the Indians in the Glen Canyon region in historic times. Irrigation by the Mormons dating from 1847 is very well documented indeed. Thomas (1948) traces the history of irrigation in the West to 1847 and carries it through to 1919 with special reference to Utah (1920). Brough's work (1898) is a detailed early study. The comprehensive investigation of irrigation in Utah under the direction of Elwood Mead (1903) for the Department of Agriculture is especially valuable for the laws and customs under which irrigation developed in the state.
