Beyond the article by Paul Jones (1959), Chairman of the Navajo Tribal Council, I have found no satisfactory reference to the history of reclamation by the Indians in the Glen Canyon region in historic times. Irrigation by the Mormons dating from 1847 is very well documented indeed. Thomas (1948) traces the history of irrigation in the West to 1847 and carries it through to 1919 with special reference to Utah (1920). Brough's work (1898) is a detailed early study. The comprehensive investigation of irrigation in Utah under the direction of Elwood Mead (1903) for the Department of Agriculture is especially valuable for the laws and customs under which irrigation developed in the state. Governor George D. Clyde of Utah has summarized the subject in a recent article (1959). The studies emerging from the Powell survey have been noted in the second section of this outline. Newell's report (1894) on irrigation in Utah for the eleventh national census contains material on county developments and it may be compared with Thompson's report in the Arid Lands for changes that had occurred within the Glen Canyon region some 10 years after the beginnings of agricultural settlement. The importance of Powell's Arid Lands as one of the foundations of western reclamation is detailed in Stegner's great book (1954). The progress of the irrigation survey in the West as initiated by Powell as Director of the Geological Survey is found in the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth annual reports of the Survey covering the years, 1888-1891 (1890-1891). See particularly Powell's own testimony on the arid lands before the Committee on Irrigation in the House of Representatives, 1890, in the eleventh annual report (1891). This same volume has an extensive bibliography on irrigation by Burnett and others (1891). Subsequent annual reports of the Survey through the twentieth (1899) contain hydrographic studies bearing upon the arid lands and the Colorado River. The long list of the Survey's water supply papers began publication in 1896. The general story of reclamation in the United States is found in a Bureau of Reclamation handbook (1942) and in the text by Golze (1952), an official in the Bureau of Reclamation. Dana's (1959) article briefly summarizes the subject. Clawson and Held (1957) and Peffer (1951) present a historical summary of acquisition and disposition of federal lands.
