Slide no. 95.5.Guerdon David Nichols joined the University of Arkansas faculty as Mathematics instructor in 1927. He became full professor in the Mathematics Department in 1945 and was appointed Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1946. Nichols received the AAUP's Alexander Meiklejohn Award for Academic Freedom in 1960 for speaking out against Act No. 10 which was later declared unconstitutional by the United States Supreme Court; Act No. 10 was a bill adopted by the Arkansas General Assembly in 1958 which intended to weed out pro-desegregation educators
